Permutazioni 2019/2020, interrupted due to the lockdown, restarts in Lavanderia a Vapore (Collegno); Casa Luft, instead, remains closed for the moment.
Lorenzo De Simone has been selected for a research residency inside the framework of Permutazioni 2019/2020, with the project Variazione#2: Eulogy to Kindness. The examination board – composed by Cristiana Candellero, Doriana Crema, Enrico Pastore, Federica Tardito, Stefano Mazzotta and Valentina Tibaldi – has been helped, in selecting, by the winners of the previous edition: Amina Amici, Elisa D’Amico, Francesco Dalmasso.
This project, designed for a single dancer on stage, sinks into the need of dealing with the question of kindness. It has become a forbidden pleasure. In our imagination as human beings, kindness is not a natural instinct: we all are crazy, bad, dangerous and profoundly competitive. People are driven by selfishness: impulses towards others are only forms of mere self-preservation. But even though the pleasure of kindness is risky, it is one of the most fulfilling things we’ve got. Today the term “kindness” embraces a range of feelings describable in different words: solidarity, generosity, altruism, benevolence, humanity, compassion, piety, empathy (Phillips A. & Taylor B., 2009).
LORENZO DE SIMONE
He studied contemporary dance following the leading national and international dancers and worked with Compagnia Nut (Milan), Willi Dorner, Compagnia Virgilio Sieni. In 2018 he started his career as an author; his first work (Variazione #1: S. Velato) debuted at the Festivals “Più che Danza” and Festival “Dominio Pubblico”. It contains a drop of water, there is water in our planets, there is water vapor in some nebulae, there is ice in other celestial bodies. It seems that water comes from space, a timeless place. How long will the comet that brought us the first drops of water travel? Every drop is a world apart. Every drop a breath. It is said that water has memory, we believe that it also has a voice and a sound, if we get very close to it… we can hear a symphony.
The word archipelago fascinates us.
His etymology inspires us, referring to groups of islands scattered in the sea, fairly close together and with similar morphological characteristics; but the meaning that the term today takes in different contexts also inspires us: an archipelago of groups, communities or even single people, isolated from each other but similar in socio-political conditions and in a relationship of mutual and intimate exchange both with each other and with elements that often constitute other “archipelagos”.
Symphony H₂O is an archipelago of creative processes united under the same common denominator: “a drop of water”. The art videos of Giuseppe Saccotelli, the performative actions of Francesca Cinalli, the soundscapes of Paolo De Santis, the installations of Mirko Ingrao and the attentive gaze of Ornella D’Agostino will give life to a sparse path but with similar and close characteristics : water will be the common denominator to investigate the relationship between three main focuses: water-cosmos, water-memory, body-landscape.
water-cosmos: when the water moves, the cosmos participates
This suggestion comes from the documentary film “The memory of water” by the Chilean Patrizio Guzman: an immersion in the history of the Chilean archipelago, of its arid desert and of its astronomical base that fascinated us with the words and testimonies of those who reveal that life came to earth through the comets that created the seas.
water-memory: when we look at water, we look at the whole of humanity
Starting from the first water with which the man came into contact – the amniotic fluid – we ask ourselves about the intimate, close relationship, but for some it is very distant that we have with the water element: memories and dreams, rites, traditions but also real life experiences that come back to the surface.
body-landscape: where do tears come from?
Our body is made of 75% water. Therefore, we reflect on the interrelation between our body and the landscape, taking a look at the effects of climate change in progress. On the one hand the effects of deficiency (desertification), on the other the overabundance (melting of ice): in both cases water is always the great protagonist, and this touches our bodies closely. The Lake, The Ocean, The River, The Waterfall, The Deluge, The Drop are at the same time a physical and emotional landscape: tears for example know about the sea … they are salty (cit. Tonino – video interview). “The gift of tears” is divine grace that the mystics know well. It, the gift, brings joy.

The artistic work deals with a continuous metaphysical reflection, on what lies beyond the “things”. In this way, the construction of a different perceptual state is shared with the audience. “Things” are the scene protagonists: dark, light, space, composition of places, noise, sound, body as an object or as a subject. The performative body and the performing one. In this new geography – in which new hierarchies are investigated – each “thing” is exposed to its double and multiple meaning.
U(R)TOPIAS

Quello che ci muove

Utopia is described as an imagined community or society that possesses desirable, nearly perfect qualities for its citizens. Originally he word comes from Greek, οὐ meaning “not” and τόπος “place” and means than “no-place”. Apergi would like to redefine this place and make it exist. She aims to reinvent the utopia of today departing from archives and memories, with the knowledge of the past. On that point that utopia becomes according to her ur-topia. The prefix -ur means ancient, primitive, the original. Ur-topia symbolises the aim to define a new utopia today, reinvented through the past as an objective for tomorrow. According to contemporary history, the utopias created on the 20th century were rejecting the past in order to create something new, in order to propose pioneering ideas that could lead to an “effective” revolution. But they failed. On the ongoing contemporary crises of ideology, the ur-topia is proposed as a project, a dream, an idea on which we will work together. The team will focus on political movements of the 20th century, on the reasons why it failed, and will try to invent a successful utopia in order to dance it.
The company was established by Patricia Apergi in April 2006. The art of dance, in the case of Aerites, is not only about “morphology”, type of ‘’movement” or “means of expression”. The group focuses on experimenting and producing performances based on theoretical, dramaturgic and movement research. The aim of Aerites Dance Company is to create artistic actions as a result of the synergy between dance, performing arts, poetry, theatrical practice and new technology. With the work d.ΟPΑ! (dopamines of post-Athenians), Aerites were chosen by the Greek General Secretariat for Youth to represent Greece at the 14th Biennale of Young Artists from Europe and the Mediterranean (Skopjie, 2009). d.OPA came in 1st and was selected to take part in the 4th Platform for Contemporary Dance at the prestigious Athens Concert Hall (2010). In 2010, Aerites Dance Company was also selected among the top ten “priority” dance companies of Aerowaves in London.

This work of Aerites maintains the spirit of navigating the urban labyrinth. The collective mind and body of the city is the raw material, which the team draws upon. This time these elements are reevaluated so that the concepts of the streets and wandering (dérive) include the foreigner, the immigrant, the person who travels whether by choice or by force.
We speak then of the path which is chosen and on which civilizations are mixed and created through their mediators, the people. Nowadays as the old urban centers undergo rapid changes due to gentrification, creation of ghettos and reclaiming of unused areas, new interpretations and practices are formed in the field of culture.
For the Planites project the complexion of the streets changes. They become a place of wandering and search for a better tomorrow, the melting pot of the foreign and the separate, the embodiment and incorporation of force and exile. Planites are people of the world. They travel and carry with them stories and experiences from the past in order to adapt to a foreign way of life without losing their own identity. They are the contemporary immigrants; they are the citizens of the world.

Trop is a solo but it is not a solitary piece. It is a journey, done alone, in order to create the possibility of meetings. A man, a tv and a lot of words. It is a work that deals with abundance and excess around a basic hole of significance. The overwhelming amount of informations we are forced to process everyday is a driving force of this performance. How do we keep or loose sanity faced with the incredible challenge of sorting out the mass of datas, words, images, concepts and of discerning lies from truth, in a time where virtually everyone can have his or her voice heard through the net and social platforms. And moreover, what is the place for dance and for the dancer inside all of this? Can beauty still be found through this jungle of symbols and meanings emptied of any power by their accessibility? As a choreographer creating structure around nothingness has been my aim, in this piece.Dancing, moving and performing around a hole with the aim of creating something solid, a real flow able to support the existence of the work. The main inspiration are videos, articles and images that have universal access on the internet, real/fake characters (it’s impossible to know) reenacted and possibly elevated to a higher status. The subtle line between lie and truth and the incredible manipulating qualities of this personas are the most fascinating elements that led me to choose them and that create a direct link to my previous work “What Happened in Torino”.

“From 1983 to 1988 myself and other thirty souls were primary school pupils in a class of an Institute run by nuns which is now a holiday home. The Institute had the name Sisters of Charity. Our only teacher, also a sister of charity, was Sister Lidia and she died over twenty years ago. It has never been easy for me to talk about the years spent in this Institute and the strict education we were subjected to. Thirty later I decided I would create a show based on those memories and I started to search for my ex classmates, believing it was essential to recreate that “community” with which I had shared such experience. To begin to put together the pieces of the “history”I interviewed them, asking very simple questions such as “What was Sister Lidia like?”; “What do you remember about her?”; “Do you remember what happened in class?”; “Were you happy when she died?” (Fabiana Iacozzilli)
From what had arisen during this first phase the show began to take shape: a docupuppets involving both puppets and people, but also a collective ritual somewhere in between The Dead Class by Kantor and The cannibals by Tabori where the adult re-reads his memories of a childhood spent in fear of being punished, interpreted by puppets in the hands of a mysterious ex-machine. These memories/pieces of wood, children reduced to marionettes, stooges of lifeless youth, impotent and manipulated like objects, move without feeling on old wooden boards which bring back memories of school desks, butchers’ chopping boards or the operating table of a past experiment. Silence all around. Only the sound of pencils writing and schoolmates breathing. And also the sound of chalk being used up in writing dictations on the blackboard. Parents are absent. No trace of them. The parents have only been drawn on the corpse of a blackboard but then soon after erased. In the silence of their footsteps, these small wooden bodies move in a Sister Lidia-World where even God lowers his gaze when He sees her.Sister Lidia, the only real life presence, the living figure of a man or woman in the middle of all these objects, escapes the sight of puppets and audience. We can hear her footsteps, see her hands, make out some features in the darkness, even smell the whiff of her cigar. We are aware she frightens us, that deep down, in the deepest depth of each of us, audience puppet performer technician board or classmate, she is the generator of fear. In this reflection concerning the deep meaning of memory, in this research for gone-by fragments of memory, my classmates helped me find a direction and eventually to understand the character of the work. The class found its true meaning at the moment when I gave up on what I had originally wanted to say and I started listening to the subject I was researching. At this point a question arose, the question to which the show itself tries to answer What are we going to do with the pain?”; “what are human beings able to become starting from their own pain?”

“What is nature that loves to create, where is death. Similar to the edge of the world in the center of a non-existent landscape, the desire to create form. The silence is dense, like reading piano notes from a great distance. Like wild flowers in a field, that always bloom according to the same rhythm; a dress like the sky or the earth, a splash of colour with undefined contours, an expression of the porosity of the soul. Dear spectator I offer you my path as a gift, reflection of a celestial song” (Raffaella Giordano)
The process of creating a choreographic work by analogy draws on nature for inspiration, and evolves through the language of the body, while the IO becomes solely the point of departure for the overall vision. The roots of this work grew out of a book: The Hill of Summer by J.A. Baker, a bizarre and mysterious English writer who writes exclusively about nature. His gaze settles on the most minute manifestations of nature while at the same time encompassing the dizzying greatness that surrounds it.

created during the residency Montpellier Danse, Agora – Cité Internationale pour la Danse and at Maison de la Danse d’Istres
SACRE is a revised version of the piece originally created by Emanuel Gat to Stravinsky’s eponymous score back in 2004. A work for three women and two men, SACRE takes apart the mechanics of Cuban salsa dancing, and reassembles them to create a complex and dramaturgically charged choreographic score. A free spirited and challenging reading of Stravinsky’s masterpiece, SACRE offers no notions of sacrifice, but rather a multitude of options for action.

The poet and philosopher Lucrezio describes the Nature of Things with a surprising attention for the explanation of phenomena. His latin poem discloses the reality of the cosmos and humanity with precursory contents of the modern science. De rerum natura is a work devoted to the union and splitting of atoms, the vastness of the space, the temporal development, the intellect, the human core from birth to decline. The work gives a vibrant and vivide glaze on natural things in order to describe the infinite mutation of the world and the cyclical regeneration. This orbital revolution stokes the desire for movement of six bodies, connected by a hidden and hot blooded thought. An anatomical draw flows from the articulation of the gesture and spreads throughout the thinnest parts of the body, penetrating from the epitelium to the bones. The bodies are connected in a scenic composition where the construction, the distribution of the elements and the relation between correlation and interdependence create an organic and breathable totality.

The performers, equipped with a helmet, bring the emotional world of the DSA on the stage, through techniques of dance theater and choreographic actions. The helmet has the double meaning of a “heavy brain” carried with fatigue that also becomes an object capable of protecting the alternative thoughts.
The work focuses on the bodily and emotional exploration of the discomfort encountered daily by a DSA and by its continuous search for adaptation to a thought, said vertical and tendentially logical, selective and sequential.
The 44 possesses the talents of the master numbers that precede it and can express itself in a way extremely versatile, it can be an innovator and reformer. Instinctive and enlightened advocate of every possible change.

The project was designed as a tool useful for teachers to deal with contemporary issues, experienced in everyday life: from the relationship with the otherness to the acceptance of diversity, from tolerance to the relationship with body.

PALISSADE

season
Quello che ci muove
Location
The word palissade alludes to that aggregative movement of membranes capable of assimilating in themselves other ones (and of a different nature), creating a unity that is always renewed and in perpetual movement.
The night event is the result of an aggregative process that has been evolving for some time, which includes NOD – Nuova Officina della Danza, Fondazione Piemonte dal Vivo and Lavanderia a Vapore, together for the promotion and dissemination of dance in the Piedmont area.

MIXED APE vol. 1
by Frédéric Despierre
music Frédéric Despierre
Inspired from the mixtape format born in the Hip-Hop music and radio culture, the performance creates a patchwork of images and physical energies, in the attempt to capture the instinctive and random nature of what it could be called “a train of thought”.

FUTURE SHADOW
by Attila Rónai
music Endre Schumicky
Our society is plunged into a speedy mood: quick replies on Messenger and emojis on Instagram are supplanting honest human communication and meetings. How this effects on young generation’s psychological and social behaviour? 15 dancers – who meet each other for the first time through a dance creation rather than being just “friends on Facebook” – tried to investigate this issue. How real connections between each other appear on stage? Can movement and music bring them closer together? How an experience like this effects the future generation? An Attila Rónai research and creation about personal differences, relations and human connection.

The winter solstice is the longest night of the year. The day is weak and bleak, the night is strong and deep. It is finally the time for Yule, where the night allows those nocturnal creatures to roam free and play. Free to gather, celebrate, give into their impulses.

ATELIER EDN: Exercising and fostering reciprocity through artistic process

season
Quello che ci muove
Location
The atelier organised at the Lavanderia a Vapore will include a two-day workshop on practical issues and insights related to audience and citizenship participation, topics at the core of EDN last reflections.
The Atelier addresses art directors, audience relations experts and artists who are currently exploring the complexity of artistic processes adopted by dance houses, i.e. co-authorship and community-led creation processes. During the event, together with artists, cultural practitioners as well as leading citizens of communities from different fields (social, pedagogical, economic, health, etc.), we are going to adopt artistic and cultural tools to explore possible horizons for future audience development strategies. The aim of the workshop is to collectively develop the aptitudes and skills required for these new challenges and reflect on them, while also setting up and developing a potential vocabulary and theoretical reference framework to guide our practices and our cultural policies.

production Aerites Dance Company
A performance coproducted thanks to the residencies: Maison de la Danse – Lyon, Hellerau Europäisches Zentrum der Künste – Dresden, Mercat de les Flors – Barcelona, Graner – Barcelona, Tanzhaus NRW – Düsseldorf, DanceIreland – Dublin, Duncan Dance Research Center – Athens; supported by modul-dance and the Culture Programme of the EU and Centre Chorégraphique National Rillieux-la-Pape.
