Dark MatterS is a winter festival, a short festival that celebrates darkness and obscurity as a space-time in which to learn to see the present and the future through different lenses. In the title, the darkness of matter is transformed into a verb, claiming the subversive power of darkness and marginality in rewriting the current sensory and political landscape: not only overturning the hegemony of sight imposed as a channel for reading the world by an enlightened but obscurantist culture, but also as an area in which to reclaim the protagonism of stigmatised and marginalised voices and bodies, often identified with blackness. A fear of difference that actualises the concept of the uncanny in a socio-political sense. Why is darkness so frightening? What are the subtle threads that link darkness and blackness? How can we open up perceptual glimmers through which a new idea of splendour can filter?
The programme, in collaboration with Black History Month Torino and the Italian Union of the Blind and Visually Impaired, combines workshops, performances and moments of reflection aimed at decolonising aesthetic approaches and canons, giving visibility and space to artists committed to overturning the dominant historical and epistemological perspective, who have often exercised a critical gaze in darkness and prototyped forms of resistance and survival.
