In Toi, moi, Tituba…, Anglo-Rwandan artist Dorothée Munyaneza draws on the literary work of Maryse Condé and feminist philosopher Elsa Dorlin to embody the figure of Tituba, a slave accused of witchcraft during the Salem trials, in an attempt to rescue the victims of colonial history from oblivion.
How can we give voice to the breaths, lives and dreams of those men and women whose identity and very existence were denied and crushed by the slave trade and the colonial system? Through words? Through the body, perhaps? Through the voice that inhabits the space, the songs that speak to those who are there and those who are far away?
