SQUARE, a site-specific holophonic installation created as part of “Proxemic Fields,” a research conducted by composer and performer Lorenzo Bianchi Hoesch between 2016 and 2017 at IRCAM/Centre Pompidou in Paris. The experience introduces the audience to an ambiguous place inhabited by sound, where it is difficult to separate the real from the possible, the concrete from the imaginary. Already experienced in France and Italy, this interactive installation lands at Lavanderia a Vapore with a tailormade version. After a phase of traversing and scouting the spaces that once belonged to Italy’s best-known psychiatric hospital, SQUARE COLLEGNO is now ready to listen: a project designed for the territory, which enriches the Lavanderia, its history, and its surrounding environmental setting, Certosa Park.
The installation offers citizens a vision, or rather a peculiar listening to the place explored. Lorenzo Bianchi Hoesch, during the residency period spent in the Lavanderia (spring 2021), collected the testimonies of those who lived or worked in that context in the past, but also of those who “inhabit” it today: artists, spectators, and communities. A phase, therefore, of field research, which was followed by the creation of the actual digital infrastructure produced at the Centre Pompidou in Paris. The audio, to be listened to on-site for a 360-degree immersive experience, translates the memorial diegesis into an evocative poetic and sonic flow.
You can enjoy SQUARE COLLEGNO for free, via smartphone, for anyone who wishes to visit the Dance House. The experience begins in the courtyard of the Lavanderia a Vapore and runs through several spaces: For more info on opening hours and reservations, write to info@lavanderiaavapore.eu.

During the making of the installation, I spent several weeks in Collegno, coming into contact with many people here. Their input proved crucial to the success of the project. It is therefore impossible to summarize in a few lines the contribution offered by each of these voices, too important to be reduced to a simple sound fragment. Therefore, I have decided to make available and usable some audio montages (admittedly quite composite), which attempt to summarize the ultimate meaning of the meetings, of those conversations that were so rich and valuable. In this sense, I have divided the material into two sections: Interviews and Pathways. The former are the actual montages of the dialogues; while the latter are rather “chats” whose protagonists are those with whom I came across wandering around the Lavanderia a Vapore. Their memories, recollections, and frequentations of those spaces are thus “re-traveled.” A red thread between the recent and distant past. On the one hand, therefore, this ensemble of voices serves as a deepening of the SQUARE COLLEGNO experience; on the other hand, however, it also takes the form of a highly multifaceted, albeit partial, sonic fresco of the universe that gravitates around the Dance House – the former laundry of the Collegno Psychiatric Hospital – and its surrounding Certosa Park.
